Dublin South East Sinn Féin -- Building an Ireland of Equals

McDowell undermined by incinerator plan

Published: 7 April, 2006

Sinn Féin's Dublin Environment Spokesperson & Representative for Dublin South East, Councillor Daithí Doolan, has called on Minister for Justice, Equality & Law Reform Michael McDowell to resign, "now his position has become totally untenable with the government's proposed incinerator for his constituency."

Speaking ahead of tomorrows anti incinerator march & rally, Cllr. Doolan said:

"The Minister McDowell claimed in his 2002 election literature that no incinerator would be built here in Dublin South East, yet this same Minister supported the Programme for Government which demands the building of an incinerator right here in Ringsend. Publicly he still claims to be against the incinerator but his presence in cabinet is tantamount to supporting the government's incinerator.

This smacks of gross hypocrisy, but the Minister cannot fool the public any longer. He must now come clean on the issue, does he support the public who voted for him or does he support the government that calls for the construction of an incinerator on Dublin's south side.

"Across Europe, in the US and Canada incinerators are being shut down as the argument for incineration is being lost. Similarly here in Ireland we need to tackle the waste crisis at source, we need to reduce the waste at production, reuse where appropriate and invest in our recycling industry. If the proposed incinerator goes ahead in Dublin then incineration will get locked into the waste management cycle and becomes virtually impossible to remove. If incinerators are allowed to become the cornerstone then their appetite needs to be satisfied by increasing our production and consumption of waste. This cannot be allowed to happen. Here in Dublin we have the opportunity to make a real difference to the waste management for the Dublin region by abandoning incineration and adopting a Zero Waste Strategy."

In conclusion Cllr. Doolan, urged, "the public from right across Dublin to attend tomorrow's march and voice their opposition to an incinerator for Dublin Bay."

Anti incineration march, tomorrow, noon, Ringsend Technical Institute, Ringsend.
