Support Parents' Demands to Keep School Open

Published: 6 February, 2004

Sinn Féin Representative for Dublin South East Daithí Doolan has joined with parents in demanding that their school is kept open.

Speaking tonight at a meeting in St Mary's School, Haddington Road Mr. Doolan called on Minster for Education & Science Noel Dempsey "To keep this school open. Children in our community should not have a price on their heads when it comes to education.

St Mary's has provided an excellent education to Dublin's South Inner City for over 100 years. It would be a scandal to let it close now. I am joining with the parents in their campaign to keep this school open. These parents are angry and have every right to be but they are determined.

Tonight's meeting has indicated that parents, pupils and staff are in partnership in ensuring St Mary's continues to provide a top education for generations to come."

The pupils of St Mary's will be taking to the streets to hold a protest outside their school on Haddington Road at 1.15pm next Wednesday.

Doolan concluded by assuring parents, "That I will be bringing this battle from Haddington Road tonight all the way into the Minister's office. He will not be allowed hide in Leinster House. Our children's education will not allow it."
