Dublin South East Sinn Féin -- Building an Ireland of Equals

City Council Cover Up Continues

Published: 23 March, 2006

Sinn Féin's Dublin South East Representative, Councillor Daithí Doolan, today accused, "City Council officials of dragging their heels on an independent fire report on the safety of 100's of Council flats. "

Speaking in Dublin, Cllr. Doolan said:

"The residents of Council flats in Ross Road, Nicholas Street and Bride Street were promised access to an independent fire safety report on their flats 3 months ago. Yet to date nothing has been produced. The report was to be promised after residents met with Council management in December of last year. It has now come ot light, in response to a question I put to City Mananger, that the audit of the flats only commenced this month. 3 months after it was to been completed.
''Residents have lead a campign to have work carried out on their flats following 2 fires in which 3 people died. Original fire safety work promised by City Council, was never carried out. Many meetings and several months later we are still waiting for this secret report.

"It is totally unacceptable that residents are forced to live in fear of more fires while Council officialls can not even produce a report promised months ago. This report now appears to be have been nothing more than a cynical PR exercise by Council management.

"I will not stand by and let residents be simply strung along with reports that never see the light of day. We are talking about fire safety, people's lives have been lost and we have a right to know what City Council are doing about it"
In conclusion Cllr. Doolan said, "the City Manager must now take full responsibility and publish the report as a matter of urgency."
