Dublin South East Sinn Féin -- Building an Ireland of Equals

Dublin set to become Fairtrade capital of Ireland

Published: 15 March, 2006

Sinn Féin's Dublin South East Representative, Councillor Daithí Doolan, has welcomed an initiative, "which aims to make Dublin the Fairtrade capital of Ireland."

Speaking at the launch of the Temple Bar Fairtrade Initiative this morning, Cllr. Doolan said:

"The commitment to Fairtrade is a major step toward global justice. Millions of farmers in the developing world depend on selling their crops to survive. Fairtrade guarantees that producers cover their costs and enables them to support their families and invest in a better future for themselves and their communities. It offers the opportunity for the public in Ireland to make a real contribution towards tackling the causes and consequences of global poverty.

"Today's initiative by TASCQ, Traders in the Area Supporting a Cultural Quarter, is an attempt to ensure that Temple Bar becomes identified with Fairtrade and that business here in the centre of Dublin will want to become associated with this growing industry."

According to Cllr. Doolan:

"Our steering group has set an ambitious target of aiming to have Temple Bar declared a Faritrade area by November of this year. We will be vigorously promoting Faritrade, encouraging companies, services, colleges, cafes, restaurants and shops to stock and serve Fairtrade products. It is an aim that we firmly believe we can achieve within in a matter of months. By doing this we will be playing our part in making Dublin the Fairtrade capital of Ireland and setting the example for the rest of Europe. "

In conclusion Cllr. Doolan, called on, "businesses to become part of this of Fairtrade and offer their customers quality products without costing the earth."

Launch of the Temple Bar Fairtrade initiative today, 11am in Cultivate Ireland, Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2.
