Doolan alarmed at City Council decision to sell

Published: 26 October, 2004

Sinn Féin Representative for Dublin South East, Councillor Daithí Doolan, has reacted with alarm at the fact, "that City Council management have simply decided to sell off their flats with out any consultation what so ever."

Councillor Doolan said:

"While I totally accept the fact that people should be entitled to own their own home, I believe it is a mistake to commence the sale of over 16,000 flats here in Dublin without consulting with councilors, residents or resident groups.
This city is in the midst of a housing crisis and for the local authority to sell up and go will only further deepen that crisis. What this city needs is a home building programme not a short term populist action that could lead to more homelessness and spiraling property prices.
Management need to answer questions:

Why has there been no consultation?
What happens to those on the housing, transfer & homeless lists?
Will flat complexes continue to be refurbished?

These are serious questions, yet when we have attempted to raise them the silence has been deafening."

Cllr. Doolan concluded by calling on the City Management, "to engage with those elected by the citizens of this city, and as a matter of urgency, enter into dialogue and consultation with councilors and residents to ensure the best deal possible for all those in our communities."  ENDS
