Doolan supports major housing initiativePublished: 15 October, 2004 Sinn Féin Representative for Dublin South East, Councillor Daithí Doolan, speaking ahead of today's official opening of affordable apartment blocks in Ringsend, welcomed the development as, "a major community response to the ongoing housing crisis. This project is a breath of fresh air at a time of over priced homes put out of the reach of ordinary people"Councillor Doolan said: "The City Housing Initiative, who built these 57 apartments, are attempting to tackle the housing crisis head on. They have so far provided 100's of people with homes here in the Ringsend area. In providing these homes at an affordable rate City Housing Initiative have challenged the perception that apartments and houses have to be priced out of reach of ordinary people. We live at a time where first time home buyers simply can not afford a home. In Ringsend the community did not accept this reality lying down. They organised themselves, got the land and provided homes for those who needed them at an affordable price." Sinn Féin Dublin MEP Mary Lou McDonald having visited this project said, "I am extremely impressed by both the commitment and ability of the women involved in providing high quality homes for those who need them most." Cllr. Doolan concluded by calling on the Minister for Environment Dick Roche, "to realise the solution to our housing crisis is on our doorstep. It simply requires the political will to learn from and support responses like City Housing Initiative. " ENDS City Housing Initiative will be opening Poolbeg Quay apartment complex, Poolbeg Peninsula, Ringsend at 3pm today. |
