Doolan backs demand for Minister's resignation

Published: 1 March, 2006

Sinn Féin's Dublin Environment Spokesperson, Councillor Daithí Doolan, has supported, "the demand by residents of Dublin South East for Minister Michael McDowell to resign."

Speaking in Sandymount today, Cllr. Doolan said:

"The call for the Minister's resignation was made following last night's successful anti incineration public meeting. A motion calling for the Minister's resignation was tabled and the meeting passed it unanimously. Residents are frustrated and angry at the fact that the Minister has colluded with Fianna Fail in their attempt to build an incinerator here on the Poolbeg Peninsula. McDowell continues to circulate literature claiming he is against the incinerator, while the government he belongs to attempts to railroad the plan through despite continuing opposition from Dublin City council. The hypocrisy is clear for all to see, McDowell is trying to speak out both sides of his mouth, saying one thing to locals while supporting government policy on incineration at cabinet level. McDowell has attempted to fool his constituents for too long yet he has done absolutely nothing to stop this incineration. In fact he signed up to a programme of government that promotes incineration and will force incinerators on communities across the state.

"Sinn Fein recognises that this City faces a huge waste crisis. But to simply build a mass burning machine on our door step is definitely no the answer. We will continue to actively oppose incineration and we are fully committed to the implementation of a Zero Waste strategy here in Dublin and across the island of Ireland."

In conclusion Cllr. Doolan, said, "Minister McDowell's position has become totally untenable. He must now do the honorable thing and resign. "
