Sinn Féin calls on Minister to meet Cuban delegation on health care

Published: 7 October, 2004

Sinn Féin Representative for Dublin South East, Councillor Daithí Doolan, speaking ahead of this evenings meeting with a Cuban government delegation in the Mansion House, called on Health Minister Mary Harney to come and listen and learn from a government that has universal free health care.

Councillor Doolan said:

"I hope that our new Minister for Health Mary Harney will take the time to meet and discuss health policies with the Cuban delegation. She would do well to come along this evening to listen and learn from a government that has universal free health care and has the highest standard of health service in the region despite the crippling embargo. If Minister Harney wants to end hospital waiting lists here is a living example of just how to do that."

Cllr. Doolan concluded by calling on the Irish government to renew efforts, "to make clear to the U.S. government that the Irish people fully support the ending of the US government embargo on Cuba and the Cuban people."ENDS
