Doolan to address apartment standards at international planning conference

Sinn Féin's Dublin Spokesperson on the Environment & Chair of Dublin City Council's Planning & Economic Development SPC, Cllr. Daithí Doolan, is set to address an international planning conference entitled "Successful Apartment Living-Combating Urban Sprawl".

The conference takes place next Monday, September 17th, in Croke Park Conference Centre, Dublin.

Speaking ahead of the conference Cllr Doolan said

"For too long the greed of developers has been allowed to drive the housing agenda. As the major stakeholder in the development of Dublin, the City Council must ensure that future housing developments will be both socially & environmentally sustainable. A major point is the size of the apartments that are currently under construction. Most apartments that have been built recently are not "family friendly" leading to the flight by families to the far flung suburbs. This is a massive contributor to urban sprawl. That urban sprawl is in turn having a massively negative impact on those families, their communities and the environment."

Cllr. Doolan outlined

This conference will be a forum to discuss and examine how we can improve the quality of live for Dublin's residents and how we can stem the current haemorrhage out to the suburbs and into surrounding counties. The conference will also serve to challenge the myth promoted by developers that higher standard accommodation must mean more expensive accommodation."

In conclusion Cllr. Doolan said

"I would strongly urge all stakeholders including developers, architects and local communities to attend and have their voices heard at this important conference."
