Conference offers Minister opportunity to tackle housing crisis-Doolan

Sinn Féin's Dublin Spokesperson on the Environment Cllr. Daithí Doolan today challenged the Minister for Environment, Heritage and Local Government to, "immediately reform Part V of the Development Act that allows developers buy their way out of providing social and affordable housing."

Speaking ahead of the 'Successful Apartment Living-Combating Urban Sprawl' conference on Monday Cllr Doolan said

"Part V was put in place to guarantee that 20% of all new developments would be social or affordable housing. But under Fianna Fail the act was amended to allow developers buy their way out of this commitment. This was, and continues to be, totally unacceptable. For too long the greed of developers has been allowed to drive the housing agenda. For developers meeting their obligations under Part V of the Development Act was secondary to meeting the need for profit."
