Apartment sizes must be harmonised upwards throughout the state - Doolan
Published: 18 September, 2007
Dublin Sinn Féin Environment Spokesperson Daithí Doolan has called on
the Minister for the Environment John Gormley to immediately meet with
Dublin City Council to discuss how standards of apartments throughout
the state can be harmonised upwards. Councillor Doolan was speaking
today after the Minister published guidelines on apartment sizes which
he said fall far short of what Dublin City Council had agreed earlier
this month.
Councillor Doolan said, "The Department of Environment's new building
standards unfortunately fall far short of what's needed. They do not
meet Dublin City Council standards and will only encourage a race to the
bottom by developers. Standards must be harmonised upwards not allowing
any wiggle room for developers.
"Dublin City Council standards are higher for 1, 2 & 3 bedroom
apartments and will guarantee more balcony space than Minister Gormley's
proposals.
"I am calling on the Minister to immediately meet with Dublin City
Council to discuss how standards can be harmonised throughout the state.
"It is also essential that the Minister introduces real local Government
reform to give us the power to ensure that developers provide vital
infrastructure such as schools, shops and health facilities when
developing housing and apartment blocks."
