Dublin South East Sinn Féin -- Building an Ireland of Equals

Tackling Dublin's Urban Sprawl a must - Doolan

Published: 17 September, 2007

Sinn Féin's Dublin Spokesperson on the Environment, Cllr. Daithí Doolan, speaking today to a sell-out conference at Croke Park on Successful Apartment Living: Combating Urban Sprawl said:-

"This successful conference is just the beginning of a process towards higher standards of development in Dublin, and of higher standards of family friendly accommodation. New property developments will only build a true sense of community if they are socially inclusive and are constructed according to the highest sustainable design principles."

In conclusion Cllr. Doolan said

"The key initiative that the Government needs to take is the rolling back of the amendments to Part V of the Development Act to include no other option than the provision of 20% of social or affordable housing in any new development. The original spirit of the legislation was sound but the "watering down" of the Act was a disgrace.

I, therefore, call on the Minister to "roll back" the amendments to Part V when he makes his speech on Wednesday. He missed the opportunity today at this conference, I ask him not to miss the opportunity on Wednesday and to work with us to help build a better Dublin, an inclusive Dublin, for the 21st Century."
