Government must match Council's new apartment guidelines-Doolan

Sinn Féin's Dublin Spokesperson on the Environment Cllr. Daithí Doolan today announced that, "there needs to be a radical rethink on planning in Dublin if we are to build communities that are environmentally and socially sustainable".
Speaking ahead of today's 'Successful Apartment Living-Combating Urban Sprawl' conference Cllr Doolan said
"Planning Dublin's future must move beyond bricks, mortar and developer's profits. 90% of our residents will soon be in apartment style homes; this provides challenges and opportunities to all the stakeholders in Dublin."
Cllr. Doolan outlined:
"My aim for this conference is to get agreement with all stakeholders that the new apartment guidelines will be implemented fully in order to tackle urban sprawl and the environmental & social consequences this causes. Dublin needs apartment blocks built for family living and to the highest energy standards."
In conclusion Cllr. Doolan said
"I am calling on the Minister for Environment John Gormely to amend Part V of the Development Act to ensure that developers have no option but to give 20% of units over to social & affordable housing. This will ensure mixed income developments and will ensure everyone benefits from the new, improved apartment guidelines. I am also calling on the Department of Environment to harmonise the government's apartment planning guidelines upwards to match Dublin City Council's. This will ensure developers have no option but abide by the new progressive planning guidelines."
Dublin City Council will be hosting an international conference on the subject. Successful Apartment Living: Combating Urban Sprawl it will take place today September 17th at 10am in the Croke Park Conference Centre, Dublin
