Veterinary College land should be given to Dublin City Council to ease housing crisis

Dublin Sinn Féin Councillor Daithí Doolan has slammed the Governments decision to sell off the 2.1acre site at the UCD Veterinary College. Councillor Doolan said the land should be used to provide or to finance social housing.

Speaking today he said, "The Government should not be selling prime Dublin land to the highest bidder at a time when the capital is facing a housing crisis. This land should be given to Dublin City Council to provide or to finance social housing.

"The average cost of building a house in the capital is 100,000 euro and the land is expected to sell for at least 100 million euro. This means that if the Government gave the land to Dublin City Council we would now be in a position to provide 1,000 social and affordable houses in Dublin and ease the growing housing crisis.

"But it seems the Government would rather sell the land to the highest bidding private developer who in turn will make a huge profit in the lucrative property market."
