Baby born in lift after mad dash to hospital

Published: 2 May, 2004

Sinn Féin Representative for Dublin South East Daithí Doolan became the proud father of a baby girl Thursday night. Síofra Maighréad Kildee-Doolan was born at 9:19PM Thursday inside a lift at Holles Street Hospital.

Following a day of labour pains, Bridget Kildee checked into Holles Street Hospital at 4:00PM. After an examination by the midwife, Bridget decided to return home when it appeared that the baby would not be arriving for a number of hours.

Upon returning to the couple's Pearse House flat, Bridget began experiencing intense contractions which indicated she was in full labour. Before Bridget could get to a waiting car, the baby began arriving. Daithí and two friends help Bridget down the stairs of the flat where a car made a dash to Holles Street. A waiting wheelchair took Bridget into the lift en route to the delivery room. Once inside the lift, to the surprise of Bridget, Daithí and the midwife, the baby was born there and then.

Daithí and Bridget want to thank the staff of Holles Street Hospital for their excellent support and dedication throughout the duration of the pregnancy and birth of Síofra. Bridget and Síofra were discharged Friday afternoon and are now home safe and sound.
