Review of Dublin Waste Plan opportunity to challenge incineration

Published: 26 June, 2004

Sinn Féin Representative for Dublin South East, Councilor Daithí Doolan, speaking today in Ringsend called on people, "to use the proposed review of the Waste Management Plan as an opportunity to seriously tackle the waste crisis in the capital. The current plan, adopted in December 1998, is fundamentally flawed. It is totally focused on imposing incineration on communities, particularly here in Ringsend."

Mr. Doolan said, "Sinn Féin will play a full and active role in the review. We have lead the campaign against the proposed incineration for Poolbeg Peninsula, now it is time for all parties on City Council to ensure that we have cross party support for the Zero Waste Strategy as outlined in our plan for the city.  Incineration is part of the problem and certainly has no role in the solution.  It is only through the promotion of Zero Waste can we really tackle the crisis. I aim to ensure that any review of the current plan focuses on the reduction, reusing and recycling of our waste.

We must also ensure that this review is done in full consultation with the communities across Dublin. Previous plans have been noted for their top down approach and lead by so called experts. We must challenge this approach to ensure this plan is community based with solutions that are workable, real and relevant. "

Mr. Doolan concluded by calling on all groups concerned with our future, "to participate fully in this review and ensure that the plan focuses on the needs of people and our environment and not on the needs of big business as has happened in the past. "   ENDS
