Doolan- Trade unions must get active on Rossport 5Published: 11 August, 2005
Sinn Féin's Dublin Spokesperson on the Environment & Dublin South East Representative, Councillor Daithí Doolan, today called for, "trade unions to actively support the 'Shelltosea Campaign' in calling for the release of the Rossport 5." Speaking ahead of this evening's protest at the Department of Marine & Natural Resources in Dublin, Cllr. Doolan said: "The continuing incarceration of 5 men on foot of injunctions from Shell Oil is a travesty of justice. These 5 men remain in jail simply for attempting to protect their community and neighbours from the dangers of a hazardous oil pipe line. Tonight's protest brings the campaign right to the door of Minister Noel Dempsey, who as Minister for Natural Resources, must take responsibility and play his part in ensuring the men are released immediately. "The trade union movement have a critical role to play in this campaign. Unions in Ireland have a long and proud history in battling for people's rights both inside and outside the workplace. The campaign for the men's release is clearly about right's, the right to protect your community against danger. It is now time for leadership and solidarity to be shown by the labour movement, history will not be kind to those who sit on the fence on this important issue." In conclusion Cllr. Doolan, urged, "trade unionists and their leadership to add their voice and numbers to the growing demand for the release of the Rossport 5." |
