Dublin South East Sinn Féin -- Building an Ireland of Equals

Doolan leads delegation to visit historic school

Published: 30 April, 2007

Sinn Féin's Dublin South East Election Candidate, Cllr. Daithí Doolan will
today lead a party delegation in their visit to Pearse Street's CBS
secondary school as part of a campaign to keep the school open. The
delegation will include the Assembly's Education Minster Catriona Ruane,
MLA.

Speaking this morning, Cllr. Doolan said

"I am delighted to take the opportunity to bring Catriona Ruane, MLA, to
visit this historic school. This is the school where both Willie & Padraig
Pearse were educated. It has been a major part of our community for
generations. But now because of government policy it may well close. We are
here today to listen to the concerns of pupils, staff & parents and to
support their demand for funding to be made available to maintain this great
school."

Cllr. Doolan continued

"The government are planning to develop one super school for the south inner
city rather than provide funding to keep this school open. Yet this school
has a proven track record in providing top class education within this part
of Dublin's inner city. This school has become a resource to the whole
community with services going beyond simply the curriculum. It now scores
above national average academic results which lifts the hopes and self
esteem of this whole area. Yet because of the Minister for Education's
policy it now face a very uncertain future."

"In any other country a school of this historic importance would be well
funded and its work appreciated, yet at a time of unprecedented economic
development this government is choosing to allow this great school go into
decline."

Concluding Cllr. Doolan demanded

"the Minister for Education Mary Hanafin to make the funding available to
keep this historic school open in Dublin's Pearse Street."

The Sinn Féin delegation will visit CBS, Westland Row, D2 at noon today.
