Sinn Féin's Dublin Economic Development Spokesperson & Representative for Dublin South East, Councillor Daithí Doolan, has today, "welcomed a recommendation to pedestrianise Wesmoreland Street."

Speaking this morning, Cllr. Doolan said:

"The recommendation to pedestrianise Westmoreland Street is positive one and should be welcomed by all who live and work in Dublin. The recommendation comes from a report by property consultants Bannon Commercial commissioned by Dublin City Council."

Cllr. Doolan, who chairs Dublin City Council's Economic Development, Planning & European Affairs SPC outlined, "the pedestrianisation of streets will only further stimulate business for the city centre, particularly at a time when we see retail challenges coming from out of town shopping centre. But reducing traffic in the city centre will also ensure our city centre is more user friendly, family friendly and a safer environment for those who choose to shop in the capital's city centre. This recommendation is but one of several I hope will strengthen the retail core in Dublin's city centre. The City Council will be consulting with the stake holders every step of the way in the hope of getting widespread support for future plans."

In conclusion Cllr. Doolan, said, "the overall aim is to create a world class shopping city, which integrates shopping with a mix of commercial, leisure and cultural activities. And all this is to be done in a city that is easy to access and navigate."
