Outrage at inspectors ruling on hearing costs

Published: 19 April, 2007

Sinn Féin's Dublin Environment spokesperson Cllr. Daithí Doolan expressed
outrage that the inspector of an Bord Pleanála's incinerator hearing would
not give a ruling on whether the costs of objectors expert witnesses would
be met at the oral hearing into the proposed incinerator at Poolbeg Dublin
4.

Cllr. Doolan said
"If a fair balance is to be agreed between the experts that are being flown
in from Europe and the rest of the world by the promoters of the
incinerator, then objectors and residents groups should have the right to
call in experts of equal standing at the promoters expense. The objectors
need to know now if they can afford a team of experts."

Counsel for various residents groups who are opposed to the incinerator
asked the inspector at the opening of the hearing to give a ruling on costs
at the outset of the hearing.

"This refusal by the inspector leaves the residents groups at a huge
disadvantage.‰ said Cllr. Doolan "In the interests of fair play the
inspector must give the objectors the funds to engage a team of experts now
and adjourn the hearing until residents groups have a similar level of
representation to the promoters."
