Doolan--St Luke's must not be closed

Published: 4 April, 2007

Sinn Féin's Dublin South East representative, Cllr. Daithí Doolan has today
slammed the Minister for Health Mary Harney's decision to close St. Luke's
cancer hospital in Rathgar.

Speaking at a protest organised by the Campaign to Save St. Luke's Cllr.
Doolan said,
"Several hundred people from across the country have come out today to
protest Mary Harney's decision. This government is once again putting profit
before people's health. The government are attempting to close down this
hospital and sell the property off to property speculators who stand to make
millions of euros. The government do not need the money and serious
questions need to be asked as to why they are shutting down a fully
operational cancer hospital.

Cllr. Doolan continued,
"Sinn Féin fully support the Campaign to save St. Luke's and we are calling
on the government to abandon their plans. The government are planning on
moving the patients from St. Luke's into St. James hospital. This is
unacceptable as St. James is ill prepared for this and are under resourced."

Concluding Cllr. Doolan called on
"Michael McDowell, who is a local TD and Mary Harney's party leader, to step
in and save the hospital."
