Doolan delighted at scraping of incinerator plan
Published: 21 February, 2007
Speaking from Ringsend today Sinn Féin's Cllr. Daithí Doolan, reacting to
the news that the incinerator plan for Poolbeg is scrapped, has
congratulated the local community for their anti incinerator campaign which
has culminated in today's announcement that the project has collapsed.
Cllr. Daithí Doolan said
"The community here in Ringsend & Sandymount has fought a long and hard
campaign to ensure that plans for an incinerator here did not go ahead. It
was ultimately a successful campaign and credit must be given to the local
community for that.
The government was pushing forward with this incinerator against the wishes
of this community and elected members of Dublin City Council and this defeat
for the government represents a great victory for the local community &
democracy in this City. City Council management may claim it is just
business as usual, nothing could be further form the truth. The plan is dead
in the water."
Cllr. Doolan continued
"Sinn Féin opposed this incinerator from the start. We oppose incinerators
as part of any waste strategy and have campaigned against them across the
island.
Some political parties who attempted to push this project through have
elected representatives who have operated cynically throughout this
campaign. These representatives opposed this incinerator in public, hoping
that their parties attempt to push through the incinerator would not affect
their vote come election time. Sinn Féin will continue to oppose any
incinerator in Dublin, not just in Ringsend."
Cllr. Doolan concluded by demanding the City Manager, "to publicly
acknowledge that the plan is dead and assure us that no more tax payers
money will be wasted on this aborted plan."
