Pro incinerator Lobby loses vote in Europe-Doolan

Published: 13 February, 2007

Sinn Féin's Dublin Spokesperson on the Environment and Local Government,
Cllr. Daithí Doolan has today congratulated MEP's for rejecting the
promotion of incinerators across Europe.

Speaking after the vote Cllr. Doolan said

"The European Parliament has today reaffirmed that incineration is the least
favourable option in waste management. The pro incineration lobbyists were
campaigning to have incineration promoted alongside reusing and recycling
and to have incineration recategorised as "waste recovery". MEP's across
Europe rightly backed the European Environmental committee's decision to
reject this incorrect and dangerous reclassification."

"This decision gives a boost to the anti incineration campaigns in Ireland
including the anti incineration campaign in here in Ringsend. The government
should take note of this decision and begin to listen to the wishes of the
community and reject incineration as an option. I would like to congratulate
all the anti incinerator groups around the country who campaigned for this
no vote and I look forward to continuing to work with them to have the
incinerators stopped all together."
