Doolan- Dublin MEPs must oppose pro-incinerator lobby
Published: 13 February, 2007
Sinn Féin's Dublin Spokesperson on the Environment & Local Government, Cllr.
Daithí Doolan, has today challenged Dublin's MEPs, "to vote this morning in
the European Parliament against the promotion of incinerators across
Europe."
Speaking in Dublin this morning, Cllr. Doolan said, "I am deeply concerned
that the Irish Government, it's MEPs and the pro-incineration lobby will
today attempt to overturn the European Parliament's Environmental Committee
decision not to accept a proposal to re-brand incineration as 'waste
recovery'."
Cllr. Doolan outlined, "if the lobbyists are successful, incinerators will
be promoted alongside reusing and recycling, instead of being viewed as the
least favorable option in waste management. This will have a serious impact
on future waste strategies for Ireland, and particularly here in Dublin
where we continue to oppose the imposition of a government incinerator in
Ringsend."
Cllr. Doolan concluded, "it is crucial that all MEPs reject the
pro-incineration lobby and back the Environmental Committee decision."
