The Dublin Docklands Development Authority is holding its Annual Social
Regeneration Conference in Killarney today. The theme of this year's
conference is "Active citizenship & Young People in Docklands."

Speaking from the conference in the Great Southern Hotel, Sinn Féin's Dublin
South East Representative Cllr. Daithí Doolan called for the establishment
of a Docklands Youth Forum.

Cllr. Doolan said "for too long young people's needs in the docklands have
been secondary to the property developers and the Docklands Development
Authority. There is a lack of youth facilities being developed and little
space is being created to meet young people's needs.

Establishing of a youth forum would be a positive move in addressing this
problem. Older people claim to speak for the youth in our communities it is
my experience that young people, if given the chance, are able speak for
themselves and organise to meet their own needs. Here in Dublin's docklands
the situation is no different. If we create such a space young people will
flourish."

Cllr. Doolan continued, "Sinn Féin is committed to building a docklands of
communities, the development must meet the needs of people not property
developers. This conference is about active citizenship and young people in
the docklands; if my proposal is adopted then it will send out the message
that young people have a role, and a future, in the development of our
docklands."
