Raising the Sale of Council Flats
Published: 31 January, 2003
The apparent sale of Dublin's City Council flats has raised concern across the city. This is according to Sinn Féin's Daithí Doolan. Speaking ahead of next Monday's Dublin City Council meeting Doolan said, "I have assured Council tenants that the issue will be addressed at Monday's City Council meeting. People have genuine concerns. These include who will be buying the 30,000 units, how will they be sold and what protection will be given to current tenants. The sale of Council property is a major project and we must ensure that the tenants are the centre of any process. We need to avoid any short-term solution, which does not address the ongoing housing crisis. So far we have been informed only through Assistant City Manger Brendan Kenny's public announcement at a housing conference. This is not the way to do business. There has been no discussion or debate on the issue. I hope this will be clarified on Monday night. As a City Council tenant myself, it worries me that the Assistant City Manager thinks that he can decide policy without any consultation with Councillors or indeed with the tenants themselves. This is wholly unacceptable and indeed unprofessional. There are concerns and they need to be addressed as a matter of urgency. And I hope this clarification starts on Monday night." Doolan concluded by calling on the City Manager John Fitzgerald "To clarify the City Council's position on the sale of City Council flats. We need an open and proper debate. Public announcements are not the way to do business. It only serves to create rumour and fear about the future."
