Doolan-Dublin honour's unsung hero of 1916

Sinn Féin's Dublin South East Representative, Councillor Daithí Doolan, has
today welcomed, "the fact that Dublin will be honouring one of the forgotten
women of 1916, Elizabeth O'Farrell, by unveiling a monument to her memory in
Dublin's south inner city."
Speaking at today's ceremony, Cllr. Doolan said:
"Elizabeth played a full and active part in 1916, yet she has become an
unsung hero of the Rising. Today is a serious attempt at undoing some
terrible rewriting of the history of this nation. Elizabeth, a member of
Cumman na mBan, played a full and active role in the Rising of 1916, but
unfortunately Elizabeth O'Farrell was immediately written out of Irish
history. Nurse O'Farrell accompanied Padraig Pearse while they handed over
the official surrender to the British forces at Moore Lane in Easter 1916. A
brush was literally taken to the picture of the historic event and she was
vanished from history. Revisionists have since attempted to write her out of
our history altogether. I am delighted that Dublin City Council has agreed
to honour Elizabeth O'Farrell in a fitting & honourable manner here in
Dublin by unveiling this monument in City Quay where she was born. I feel it
only fitting that the city remembers this great woman and recognises the
full role she played during those historic events of 1916.
In conclusion Cllr. Doolan, said, "I hope we can use the event to reflect on
her role in 1916 and ensure that women like Elizabeth take their rightful
place in the records of Irish history."
The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr. Vincent Jackson, will unveil the monument
today, Saturday, January 13th 11am City Quay Park on Sir John Rogerson's
Quay D.2.
