Dublin South East Sinn Féin -- Building an Ireland of Equals

Development of Dublin Port & Bay offers new opportunity-Doolan

Published: 18 December, 2006

Sinn Féin's Dublin Spokesperson on the Environment & Local Government, Cllr
Daithí Doolan, has today claimed, "that a committee set up by Dublin City
Council to examine developing Dublin Port and Bay Area offers a new and real
opportunity for the city."

Speaking this morning ahead of the Committee meeting, Cllr. Doolan said:

"I will be joined this morning by fellow Sinn Féin Councillor Killian Forde
on the Dublin City Council Sub Committee to study the future development of
Dublin Port & Bay Area. This committee is established at a critical time for
Dublin Port and its surrounding communities. Any plan will have massive long
term affects for these communities and the greater Dublin region."

Cllr. Doolan explained,

"The committee was set up by Dublin City Council following a report in July
of this year as a first stage in the development of a plan for the Dublin
Port area. Sinn Féin will engage with all the key stakeholders in the port
and in doing so produce a wide ranging economic, recreational &
environmental study of Dublin Bay and the port area. Sinn Féin will be
proactive in ensuring all voices are heard and all concerns addressed so the
final plan is inclusive and sustainable. Community & residents groups, the
business community, environmental groups and Dublin's four local authorities
must all be engaged in this important process. It is vital to the future of
Dublin that a strategic framework plan for the Bay area is produced to guide
any future development of this great resource. This framework plan will be
the first attempt in Ireland to establish parameters to guide the
development of coastal regions. If successful this plan can easily be
modified and replicated across the island."

Cllr. Doolan outlined, "Sinn Féin's vision is guided by: consultation,
social, economic and environmental sustainability, protection and
strengthening of surrounding communities and the need to maintain the port
as an engine for growth in the region. But we are very clear that any
development will be an incineration free development of the Poolbeg
peninsula and the development of the Poolbeg
Peninsula must meet the housing needs of the city's citizens rather than the
greed of private developers."

The Sub committee meet today, Monday December 18th, 10.30am, Dublin City
Council Civic Offices.
