City Council to carry out Dublin wide Fire Risk Assessment-Doolan

Published: 5 December, 2006

Sinn Féin's Dublin Spokesperson on the Environment, Cllr. Daithí Doolan, has this morning welcomed Dublin City Council's commitment to, "finally carrying out a full and total Fire Risk Assessment in all four local authorities in Dublin."

Speaking after last night's Dublin City Council meeting, Cllr. Doolan said:

"The decision follows the unanimous endorsement I received for my motion demanding a full Fire Risk Assessment for the greater Dublin area. I have been lobbying and campaigning for 2 years to have this assessment carried out."

Cllr. Doolan explained,

"For the last 25 years there has been no strategic fire services plan for the Dublin area, management have simply responded in a piece meal fashion. While the fire service themselves have asked for a Fire Risk Assessment to be carried out their voices were ignored. As part of our campaign Sinn Féin have met with Dublin Fire Brigade and SIPTU in an attempt to co-ordinate our demand to have management realise their responsibility to the citizens of Dublin. Now finally resources, personnel and capital spending can be rolled out across Dublin in a thought out strategic manner following the completion of the risk assessment. Dublin is a rapidly changing city, over the last 25 years huge changes have occurred in population & demographics, this is reflected in the demands made of our Fire Services. Yet senior management continued to run that service as if it were still 1981. This is totally unacceptable and I am sure this motion is the beginning of the end for that irresponsible approach to fire safety and prevention. Now the job is to ensure the Fire Risk Assessment is carried out as soon as possible in a fully inclusive and accountable manner."

In conclusion Cllr. Doolan demanded,"the City Manager, John Tierney, to commence without any further delay this Fire Risk Assessment."
