Dublin South East Sinn Féin -- Building an Ireland of Equals

Doolan Welcomes Support for Waste Charter

Published: 14 February, 2004

Sinn Féin Representative for Dublin South East Daithí Doolan, speaking today at the party's National Elected Representatives in Navan, Co Meath, welcomed "the group's support for a new waste management charter entitled 'Towards Zero Waste'. As the only all Ireland elected representatives' forum it is significant that this group supports the charter."

Mr. Doolan urged the party to "take the charter, campaign for it, get support for it and implement it. This charter clearly outlines how Sinn Féin will turn the current waste management crisis around.

This charter is based not on incineration or landfill but on reducing, reusing and recycling of waste. The government agenda of burning or burying our waste is just not good enough. This charter will challenge that simplistic view and will look to deal with the crisis in a holistic approach, and will deal with the causes and not just the consequences of the waste crisis.

The waste crisis knows no borders or boundaries. It needs to be tackled on an all Ireland basis and we intend to solve it on an all Ireland basis and this charter reflects that. We have the ability, the political will and the organisation to implement this charter in full.

Doolan concluded by urging people to, "go out into our communities and ensure this charter is supported by environmental groups, business groups, farming organisations and indeed other political parties. In this way we can realise a sustainable future for all."

The Charter, "Towards Zero Waste", will be officially launched on Tuesday next, February 17th, 11am, Earl of Kildare Hotel, Kildare Street Dublin 1.
