No room for Hume Street patients in St Vincent's Hospital

Published: 28 September, 2006

Sinn Féin's Dublin South East Representative Daithí Doolan, has today revealed that patients of Hume Street hospital will have no where to go once the hospital is sold at the end of next month.

Cllr. Doolan said

"I have met with senior members of the Irish Nurses Organisation who have confirmed that there is no room at St. Vincent's to house the dermatology services of Hume Street. This is a scandal. How can the HSE claim a "seamless transfer of services to St. Vincent's hospital with no disruption to patients' if the patients have nowhere to go? The transfer also has negative implications for the already overstretched facilities at St. Vincent's Hospital."

Cllr Doolan continued by saying:

"It is totally unacceptable that the HSE thinks it appropriate to treat Hume Street Hospital as a cash cow. That public buildings & public land is being sold for private developments such as hotels , offices or high value apartments is a stark reflection on the current Government's policy priorities. Yet again, essential services are being downgraded at a time when the health care system should be developing and expanding its services."

In conclusion Cllr. Doolan called on:

"The HSE to reconsider the sale of the hospital. It is apparent from yesterday's report in the Irish Times that the building is being sold at this point to tie in with an overall development plan for the street by private investors. To leave patients requiring specialist dermatology services high & dry is totally unacceptable."
