Sinn Fein to address Liverpool,s James Larkin Commemoration

Published: 1 September, 2006

Sinn Féin is to address the annual James Larkin Commemoration, organised by Cairde Na hEireann, in Liverpool tomorrow. The main speaker at the event will be Sinn Fein's Councillor Daithí Doolan.

Speaking ahead of the commemoration, Cllr. Doolan said he, "was delighted and honoured to be invited to speak at this major event. Jim Larkin was one of the great labour leaders of the 20th century. He was able to fuse the two central revolutionary thoughts in Ireland, the labour and the national. He was a republican with a truly internationalist outlook, organising workers in England, Ireland and the USA."

Cllr. Doolan explains that, "Jim Larkin and what he represented in 1913 is still relevant today. Companies are now exploiting immigrant labour in an attempt to undermine minimum wages and lower health and safety standards in the work place. This behaviour is totally unacceptable and should be opposed by workers, trade unionists and politicians alike. Sinn Fein continues to actively campaign with trade unionists against these divisive tactics. Worker's rights are a priority for us in the building of an Ireland of equals."

In conclusion Cllr. Doolan, demanded, "the Irish government to finally establish a Ministry for Labour, whose sole focus would be the promotion and strengthening of rights for those in the workforce."

The annual James Larkin Commemoration assembles noon, Saturday September 2nd, Mount Pleasant, Liverpool.
