Department of Environment shut down by strike action

Published: 16 July, 2009

Sinn Féin spokesperson, Daithí Doolan speaking from this morning's SIPTU picket at the Department of the Environment in Dublin, has called on Minister Gormely to resolve the stike as a matter of urgency.

Doolan said, "Minister Gormley needs to resolve this dispute immediately. This morning's action has shut down the Department of Environment and it is the Minister's responsibility to resolve the dispute by re-instating the 14 sacked cleaners immediatley. There was an agreement when Schorman Contract Cleaners won the cleaning contract from Eco Facilities Management that they would retain the existing staff working in the Department buildings.

"But on the day Shorman's contract commenced the workers were simply fired. This action by Schorman is scandalous and must be reversed.

"The Minister must respond immediately by ensuring that any future contracts issued by his Department are dependant on retaining the existing staff as outlined in government legislation."
