HSE decision to abandon major €40m Dublin development criticised - Doolan

Published: 22 April, 2009

Sinn Féin's Dublin City Councillor Daithí Doolan, has today revealed that
the Health Service Executive has pulled a major €40m health care
development for Dublin's south inner city.

Cllr. Daithí Doolan, who met with HSE Management, condemned the action as,
"short sighted" and "an attack on the most vulnerable here in Dublin's
inner city."

Cllr. Doolan outlined, "The HSE had pledged to redevelop the Old Meath
Hospital site in Kevin Street. The total cost was €40m, of which €30m was
already ring-fenced by the HSE. Services were to include a 50-bed community
unit, respite for the elderly, day care centre, sheltered housing &
addiction counselling. All these have been simply abandoned.

"The decision is even more disgraceful considering that this plan was first
unveiled by former Minister for State Ivor Callely, during the 2002 general
election. This plan was later abandoned after the election. The residents
of the inner city feel betrayed once again. Sinn Féin will continue to work
with residents and local health care action groups to have the decision
reversed."

In conclusion Cllr. Doolan demanded, "Minister Harney to reverse this
decision and to ensure Dublin's inner city receives the best health care
service possible."
