Dublin City Council passes motion calling for reversal of Dublin Bus cuts

Published: 2 February, 2009

Dublin City Council this evening passed a motion put forward by Sinn Féin calling on Dublin Bus to reverse its decision to cut services across the City. Sinn Féin's Cllr. Daithí Doolan welcomed the cross party unanimous support for the motion and said it showed the "dept of anger there was over this issue."

Cllr. Doolan said, "I very much welcome the unanimous cross party support there was this evening for the emergency motion against the cuts in services proposed by Dublin Bus. I am delighted that the representatives of the Bus workers from SIPTU whom we invited here tonight witnessed a unified City Council expressing its solidarity with them.

"But not only are 290 jobs in jeopardy here. We are talking about a vital public service for this city - a service that will be crucial in the time ahead as we try to work our way out of recession being severely curtailed.

"It is shocking that the Government has adopted a 'head in the sand' attitude to this evolving crisis in public transport. And its all the more disappointing that the axe is being taken to this public service while the Green Party is in power. Where is the concern for the environment now? Where is the need to get more cars off our roads?

"At this time of economic uncertainty we need dependable and efficient public services and infrastructure - especially services and infrastructure like bus services that are vital in making Dublin City a better place to do business.

"I am appalled that Dublin Bus didn't see fit to even discuss, as was revealed in answer to questions I raised at tonight's meeting, these drastic cuts with the City Council before making them. It is not good enough. I would repeat the call of Sinn Féin and the call of Dublin City Council to Dublin Bus to reverse their decision immediately."
