Doolan - Development Plan must deliver a sustainable Dublin
Published: 31 January, 2005
Sinn Féin Representative for Dublin South East, Councillor Daithí Doolan, speaking ahead of tonight's vote on the City Development Plan, has said that, "it is vital that this development plan delivers a Dublin that is economically, environmentally and socially sustainable."
Speaking this morning Cllr. Doolan said:
"The plan gives us a unique opportunity to develop a Dublin that actually caters for the needs of people and their communities and not just the profit of private developers, which has been the case in recent years. I hope to receive cross party support for motions calling for at least 20% social and affordable housing being provided for along with 20% public open space on land subject to the Z12 zoning objective. No longer can we stand by and witness developers simply buying their way out of their obligation to provide homes for those who need them.
"I am also confident that a motion reiterating the Council's support to rezone the Poolbeg Peninsula to exclude incineration will once again receive unanimous support. Our waste crisis can not simply be incinerated away, we need a strategy that is based on Zero Waste whereby we reduce, reuse and recycle our waste, not just burn and bury it in somebody's back yard."
In conclusion Cllr. Doolan said, "Councilors have a great opportunity tonight to ensure Dublin's residents and communities can look forward to a future which gives them a chance to have a home and an incinerator free future." ENDS
