Council to demolish flats in multi million redevelopment-Doolan

Published: 2 May, 2006

Sinn Féin's Dublin South East Representative, Councillor Daithí Doolan, has today, "welcomed the announcement from City Council that they intend to demolish the flats in Tom Kelly Road in Dublin's south inner city."

Speaking today, Cllr. Doolan said:

"Following months of discussion and debate with the Department of Environment, finally Dublin City Council have announced they intend to demolish Tom Kelly Road flats and rebuild social, affordable and private housing. This multi million-euro development will also include much needed community and social facilities.

The announcement came after months of speculation about the future of the flat complex. A plan to refurbish had been rejected by the Department so now the green light has been given for this more radical development. If the work goes according to plan I think it will have a very positive effect on the quality of life for people in this community. But it is vital that City Council and developers do not lose sight of the residents needs in this community.

To succeed residents must be kept at the centre of any planning for the future and that consultation with the residents must be open and honest. I have commenced a door-to-door survey of the complex to find out at first hand what peoples needs are during this development. I look forward to working with the Local Development Committee, City Council and the Department to ensure that all residents who wish to return after the development are accommodated, that the number of social and affordable dwellings are kept to a maximum and that the community and social amenities are built first to ensure the community are first to benefit from any redevelopment."

In conclusion Cllr. Doolan demanded that the City Manager, "engages as a matter of urgency with the residents who have waited years for this announcement."
